Wintering Well Part 1: Winter Begins When The Ice Sings
Wintering Well Part 1: Winter Begins When The Ice Sings
Trying to record the wonderful vibrations of water against early fall ice has been elusive. I finally resorted to recording the tiny "zip" of sound my boot created by cracking a thinly iced-over puddle. I then took that tiny sound and transformed it into the emotional power that I experience when standing by Ocean Lake during these sometimes frightening but always beautiful sounds. That tiny "zip" that I used can be heard here if you scroll down to "Ice Thin Zips" about 15 seconds in. I live about 4 miles from Ocean Lake, and occasionally I have been able to hear those incredible sounds from my home. I've been reticent about pairing my music to video, not wanting to use my stuff as "background" music. Sound is more powerful for emotion than a photograph or video. I want to create vague visual cues that will gently guide the listener to their own memories. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a sound is worth a thousand pictures.
