Wintering Well Part 1 Winter Begins When The Ice Sings

All the sounds you hear are from a single recording I made of gently stepping on a shallow puddle covered with a thin sheet of ice--"zzzip".  I wanted to get a recording of the actual lake ice singing, but that's always been elusive for me.  Instead, I took that tiny "zip" of a sound and created what I experience as the moving power that the great waves in an early winter Ocean Lake creates.  When I've heard the actual waves, it's often quite frightening and always overwhelmingly beautiful.   I live about four miles from the lake, and very occasionally, I've heard the deep roars from my home.

I don't envision my music as "background" music for films.  I think of them as stand-alone works, and only give titles to the pieces to give the listener something to hang on to.  There are a few pieces, however, that I composed with images in mind, and eventually want to create those as videos.  The want the music to always be foremost, simply guiding the listeners into a certain familiar place in their own hearts.  It is sound that makes us recall the emotional impact of an experience, much more than the images.  If a picture is worth a thousand words, a sound is worth a thousand pictures.

(There is no music for the first 30 seconds or so.)  This is the first part of three.  That original sound source "zip" can be heard here.  If you scroll down to "Ice Thin Zips"; the sound occurs about 15 seconds in.  You can enlarge the screen by the box in the lower right.
